What lessons to take from Nuggets' NBA championship? Sometimes patience pays off.
The Nuggets' decision to build around core players Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray paid off with the franchise’s first NBA championship Monday night.and poured out on the streets of Denver on Monday might have been 47 years in the making, a mix of customary championship exultation and relief from long-held hopes and expectations realized at last. As with that night long ago in The Summit and on Richmond Avenue, the first time is special.
It’s never that easy, but it would be a very good thing if the NBA learns from the Nuggets and the way they became champions. It might even offer a useful example for the Rockets and other teams taking their first building steps.Failing that, however, the Nuggets bring a well-timed reminder that teams can reach the top without the quick-fix star-chasing method.
This was how the Spurs built around Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker remained on top so long. It worked for the Warriors, with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, though Kevin Durant stopped by for a couple championships. Jokic makes the Nuggets an anomaly, and not because he is so unusual as a 7-foot, 285-pound Larry Bird, but because he is arguably the best player in the NBA and was chosen in a draft after 40 other players were picked. The Nuggets had no top-five picks. Their top free-agent additions were Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in 2022 and Bruce Brown last summer, neither qualifying as the sort of blockbuster addition who drives offseason conversations and lofty predictions.
