Sister Joan Eileen Butler, 88, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Sunday, authorities said.
A nun from Essex County who continued to volunteer her services after retirement was identified Monday as the driver killed in a crash over the weekend on the Garden State Parkway.that occurred about 10:45 a.m. Saturday on the Parkway in Monmouth County, authorities said.
A traffic investigation showed that Butler had stopped her car on the right shoulder in the southbound local lanes near milepost 120.5 in Aberdeen. Butler was taken to Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, where she was pronounced dead. The 49-year-old driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.“Sister Joan Eileen had an uplifting and positive spirit. Her quick-witted manner brought laughter to those around her,” her obituary says. “She had great generosity and was always ready to help anyone in need.”
Butler retired in 2006 and continued to live at Our Lady of Lourdes Convent until June 2022, when she moved to the Convent of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, her obituary says.
