As the delta variant continues to drive the latest coronavirus surge, many long-term care providers and advocates are calling for mandatory vaccinations for staff members—a stark change in tone from earlier in the pandemic.
The American Association of Retired Persons estimates that about 78% of long-term care facility residents are fully vaccinated -- while staff vaccinations are only at 56.7%.
In April, the CDC linked a COVID-19 outbreak at a Kentucky nursing home to an unvaccinated health worker at the facility. Authorities identified 46 total COVID-19 cases, resulting in the death of three residents -- one of whom had been vaccinated. A new CDC report released on Thursday addressed vaccine hesitancy among long-term care staffers, despite their being prioritized for early COVID-19 vaccination due to their high-risk roles. The report comes as more than 50 major health organizations are calling for mandating staff vaccines.
"Staffing related issues in long-term care facilities are always a concern," said Lubline."We don't want them to leave." SEIU, the union that represents health care workers, including many who work in nursing homes, is also encouraging employers to make it easier for staffers to get the vaccine. Douglas Adkins, the administrator at DaySpring Senior Living, one of the first nursing homes in the country to mandate vaccinations for staff in March, told ABC News that he stands by his decision.
