NYC official says migrant crisis ‘could go on for years’, slams $35M from feds: ‘Fiscal emergency’
“could go on for years” if the Biden administration doesn’t fork over more federal aid, Mayor Eric Adams’ top budget official declared Tuesday, slamming the already allocated $38.5 million as so puny it doesn’t even cover a full week of migrant-related expenses.
“We have been awarded thus far only $38.5 million by the federal government. Let me put that in perspective: at our current daily spending rate, that $38.5 million barely covers five days of asylum seeker costs.” Jacques Jiha, NYC’s Office of Budget and Management Director, said Gotham is currently receiving a daily average of 602 new migrant arrivals.Over 1250 hotels are being used to accommodate over 73,000 asylum seekers who arrived in the city since last spring, according to city hall.
