Business owners say problems continue at industrial park around Brother Benno's Center
The Oceanside Police Department has proposed ending the sack lunch food program at Brother Benno’s Center as a way to reduce problems with the homeless population in the surrounding industrial park.
“The problem is that the city has assigned police the impossible task of moving the homeless out of the industrial park, when there’s no place for them to go,” said Dennis Martinek, a 44-year Oceanside resident, former Planning Commission member and Brother Benno’s volunteer. Commissioner Louise Balma said another solution might be something similar to what Oceanside did to clean up the area around the downtown transit center.
A 61-year-old Oceanside native, Bone said he graduated from Ocean Shores, the former alternative high school on Oceanside Boulevard where the city intends to open a 50-bed homeless shelter later this summer. He said his parents were among the first Black families to move to Oceanside, long before he was born.
“I need to stock up,” Manuel said, because he probably won’t be back to the center for a few days. Sometimes he eats at Benno’s six days a week, and some weeks only twice. In addition to food, Brother Benno’s provides clothing, showers, haircuts, basic toiletries, a laundry room and other services. Another speaker, former Union-Tribune editorial writer Dan McSwain, said there are better ways to deal with the problems than eliminating lunches.
