An off-duty Department of Public Safety trooper shot someone they believed to be breaking into their downtown Houston apartment early Monday morning.An off-duty Department of Public Safety trooper shot a man who was allegedly trying to break into the trooper's apartment early Monday, according to police.
Houston's Assistant Chief of Police Yasar Bashir said the shooting occurred right after midnight on the fifth floor of the apartments in the 500 block of Crawford Street, near Minute Maid Park downtown. Bashir said the trooper discharged his weapon one time and struck the person in his right shoulder. He said the man left the apartment after being shot but police soon located him, provided medical attention, and transported him to a local hospital where he was expected to survive.
According to Bashir, officers with the Houston Police Department applied two tourniquets to stop the man from bleeding, saving his life. Bashir also said the person who was shot lived in the same building as the trooper.HPD commanders and PIO are en route to an outside agency officer involved shooting in the 500 block of Crawford St.
Preliminary information is a suspect was shot and taken to a hospital. The law enforcement officer was not injured.
