Alan Weber, 54, was wielding swords when officers responded to a 911 call, police say

A Long Island man was fatally shot by a police officer on Tuesday after the victim allegedly “confronted” officers with swords, according to statements from the Suffolk County Police Department and the New York State Attorney General’s office.Officers responded to a 911 call on Tuesday evening about Weber “acting violent” at home, the police statement says, adding that he refused to meet officers outside when they arrived.

Police recovered two fencing swords at the scene, but the statement did not explicitly state if those were the swords Weber was holding. Weber was in a fencing mask when the incident occurred,Neighbors said they had seen Weber acting erratically all throughout the afternoon, approaching different neighbors' houses, NBC New York reports. Those familiar with him said he suffered from mental illness.in a fencing tournament as recently as April of this year.
