The U.S. is launching its biggest lease sale of territory to build offshore wind-power farms in federal waters, and has set an ambitious target to boost the energy source by 2030. The reality is that the industry has a long way to go in America.
The auction of half a million acres off the coasts of New York and New Jersey this week represents a milestone for President Biden’s climate and renewable-energy agenda. But developing a U.S. offshore wind industry is going to be challenging.The U.S. has two offshore facilities operating now. Mr. Biden targets 30 gigawatts of capacity by 2030, enough to power millions of homes. So far, there are 30.7 gigawatts of projects in the pipeline, says S&P Global Market Intelligence.
“The whole world is crossing fingers and wishing for it to ease. But in reality, it’s not there yet. The free flow of goods and the free flow and mobility of people are still not established.”A construction crunch looms, too. Turbines are ballooning in size, outgrowing installation vessels. Global demand for ships that can handle the largest turbines will outpace supply by 2024, according to Rystad Energy.
