Proponents of abortion access cleared their first hurdle to make the November 2023 ballot Thursday.

Advocates for abortion access want to enshrine protections in the Ohio Constitution. The proposed amendment would state that"every individual has a right to make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions, including but not limited to decisions on contraception, fertility treatment, continuing one’s own pregnancy, miscarriage care and abortion."Opponents of abortion access say the amendment is out-of-step with Ohioans and would allow abortions later in pregnancies.
"We look forward to exposing the dangers of this extreme amendment being pushed on Ohio by the abortion industry," Ohio Right to Life CEO Peter Range said, arguing that it would harm young girls and women.The amendment comes after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, returning abortion policy to the states.
Current Ohio law bans doctors from performing abortions after cardiac activity is detected. That law, signed by Gov. Mike DeWine in 2019, is currently on hold by a court order. It's not yet clear when the Ohio Supreme Court will review the legal debate.
