The ongoing feud among Ohio House Republicans flared up again on Wednesday, as they abruptly decided against holding a vote on appointing a Norfolk Southern train conductor to a vacant seat.
Justin Pizzulli, of Franklin Furnace in Scioto County, was recommended over seven other applicants by a House GOP screening committee to be appointed to Ohio House District 90, according to House GOP spokesman Aaron Mulvey. If appointed, Pizzulli would finish the term of Republican Brian Baldridge, who stepped down after Gov. Mike DeWine named him director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
Stephens said the problem wasn’t about Pizzulli personally, but rather the ongoing schism between the House GOP caucus created after Stephens upset state Rep. Derek Merrin to become House speaker in January with the help of House Democrats.State Rep. Ron Ferguson, an Eastern Ohio Republican who backs Merrin, disputed that Pizzulli had the votes needed to be appointed. Ferguson said he disliked that nether Merrin nor his top allies were named to the screening committee.
The newly formed Ohio Senate Select Committee on Rail Safety held its first public hearing Wednesday afternoon about the derailment, with the directors of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Public Safety set to testify.
