As the manhunt for the mass shooter in Maine continues, some are turning to legislation, pushing for change to try and prevent the next tragedy, looking to tools like Red Flag Laws.
“So some states have what are often referred to as Red Flag Laws or extreme risk protection orders which enable a judge to temporarily take away the guns of individuals who have demonstrated in some way to be threats to themselves or others,” said Associate Professor of American politics at Case Western, Matt Lacombe.Lacombe said Maine does not have Red Flag Laws to alert law enforcement to the person or temporarily remove his guns before an incident, also noting Ohio has no such law either.
Grim says she pushed for the legislation earlier this year and emphasized that if a firearm is removed, it would be a temporary measure, not a permanent ban for the person.
