Ohio lawmakers have voted to temporarily relax filing requirements for state legislative and congressional candidates in response to uncertainty around the state’s ongoing redistricting process, which remains tied up in court days before a legal deadline.

Ohio lawmakers have relaxed candidate-filing requirements as Ohio's state legislative lines remain in flux a week before a crucial deadline. COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio lawmakers have voted to temporarily relax filing requirements for state legislative and congressional candidates in response to uncertainty around the state’s ongoing redistricting process, which remains tied up in court days before a crucial legal deadline.

So, generally, the law change approved on Wednesday temporarily would accept signatures from a district other than where a candidate is running, as long as the signatures would have been accepted under the old lines. The new elections language was added to a noncontroversial bill, House Bill 93, that involves confidentiality provisions in public records for domestic violence and sexual assault victims. The bill cleared the Ohio Senate unanimously earlier Wednesday, and the Ohio House approved it later in the afternoon in a bipartisan 74 to 19 vote.

Democrats have asked to move back the candidate filing deadline, something Republican state legislative leaders have said they are unwilling to do.
