The House of Representatives voted Tuesday on whether Jim Jordan should be its Speaker.
WASHINGTON, D. C. - U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan on Tuesday fell short of the 217 votes he needs to become the House of Representatives’ next speaker, as 20 Republicans declined to back his candidacy in a recorded House vote.
Now that Jordan knows who doesn’t support his candidacy, he’ll reach out to them in an effort to win their backing, said Jordan spokesman Russell Dye. U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky predicted that Jordan’s popularity with the Republican base will make them urge their congressman to vote for Jordan.
As House Judiciary Committee chairman, Jordan has led the GOP charge on myriad investigations this year. He was tapped to lead a committee investigating the weaponization of the federal government, and he was to have a prominent role in a Republican-backed impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
By Monday, Jordan won over several high-profile legislators who’d been reluctant to support him. He got endorsements from past skeptics including House Armed Services Committee chair “I think I’m one individual who can bring our team together and then help our team go tell the country, what we’re doing and why it matters to them,” Jordan told reporters. “We got broad support across the conference. I feel good about where we’re at.”“We try to talk to everyone get everyone working as a team and we’ll do try to the same thing as speaker, use the same strategy,” said Jordan.
