The August 19 fundraising event at the park will feature a conversation about early Ohio wine pioneer George Lonz as well as plans to restore the Lonz family mansion on the grounds.
MIDDLE BASS ISLAND, Ohio – The Ohio State Parks Foundation is hoping to recapture some of Lonz Winery’s glory days with a fundraiser this month to aid in the property’s restoration.
, built in 1906 by island winemaker August Schmidt and sold to George Lonz in 1926. Plans include turning the 3,200-square-foot house, which was in a state of significant disrepair, into a small museum and bed and breakfast. The state recently allocated $5 million to the restoration. Regular ferry service runs to the island from the mainland and nearby downtown Put-in-Bay.
