Ohio State's backup running back Dallan Hayden stepped into the spotlight on Saturday.
Ohio State tackle Paris Johnson, Jr. celebrates with Ohio State running back Dallan Hayden after his touchdown run during the Ohio State Buckeyes versus Maryland Terrapins game on November 19, 2022 at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium in College Park, MD.WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana — From the outside, any role Dallan Hayden could play in Saturday’s game against Purdue felt, at absolute best, minimal.
TreVeyon Henderson was not ready to return from an injury. Miyan Williams was added to the unavailability report. And in the second quarter, Chip Trayanum, took a big hit up high and had to leave the game. He finished with 76 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown and was the Buckeyes’ leading rusher on the day. On paper, Hayden seeing the field didn’t seem to be even a remote possibility.“It just shows the talent in our running back room,” Hayden said. “When one guy goes down, the next guy is very good. I feel like we have the best room in the country. That’s why having depth is great.”
The guy holding the ball for the majority of the afternoon, fortunately for Ohio State, was ready for this exact situation.“He’s got really good feet,” Day said. “When the ball’s in his hands, that’s when he’s at his best. He’s got good vision, good quickness, but I think it shows his mental preparation because he hasn’t played a bunch this year. To be able and go do that, it says a lot about his preparation.”He earned consistent carries, but those carries came in waves.
