The Edmonton Oilers have fired head coach Dave Tippett the morning after they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1.
The Edmonton Oilers have fired head coach Dave Tippett on Thursday, according to TSN's Darren Dreger. Jay Woodcroft, who was the head coach of the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, will take over behind the bench.
The firing comes the morning after the Oilers lost 4-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks and two nights after being shut out 4-0 to the Vegas Golden Knights. The Oilers had previously won five of six games following a seven-game losing streak. The timing of it is a bit weird, considering the Oilers generated their fifth-most shot attempts and third-most scoring chances in a game this season, per Natural Stat Trick. But at this point, it's all about results and it was an inevitable move after the Oilers started the season with a 16-5-0 record and have spiraled into a 7-13-3 stretch since. Patience is clearly running thin.
The Oilers are five points out of the final wildcard spot in the Western Conference with two teams to jump. They have a 39.7 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to Money Puck.
