Tradition 'makes an important difference' at Mt. Joy Baptist Church in Trussville.
Mt. Joy Baptist Church in Trussville, the only church in Jefferson County founded by enslaved people and still active, has been worshiping since 1857. That history remains important to the 200-member congregation, said the Rev. Larry Hollman, pastor since 1992.
Mt. Joy has a cemetery that’s 160 years old, with 65 graves, although it’s difficult to reach, in the woods between the back of the church and the back of the Tutwiler Farms subdivision. The last burial there was 1962, Hollman said. Mt. Joy was founded in 1857 when enslaved people who attended First Baptist Church of Trussville were allowed to start their own church. First Baptist Trussville was established in 1821. “We call them the mother church,” Hollman said.
In Ruhama Baptist Church, enslaved people worshipped behind a rail; at Canaan Baptist Church in Bessemer, enslaved people sat in the balcony; and Mt. Hebron Baptist Church in Leeds built an annex for slaves to worship in. Black people seldom were allowed to start churches during slavery because of the fear of slave revolts. Their worship services were usually supervised by whites who made sure that the sermon topics were not controversial.
