Ohio State's Maxwell Moldovan enters 2nd U.S. Open less star-struck by celebrity players, saying, 'I just have to look at it as I belong out there.'
A year ago, thequalified for his first U.S. Open, and upon arriving in Boston bumped into big-name PGA Tour players around every fairway bend and bunker.
“It was my first time on a stage like that last year, so I took full advantage … and played too much golf leading up to it,” he said Wednesday after finishing a less-exhausting nine holes at Los Angeles Country Club, site of this week’s event. “I knew that wouldn’t be a good idea ” Staying focused on his own game is not always easy when playing practice rounds with notable pros such as veteran Matt Kuchar and 2022 tour rookie of the year Cameron Young, but it’s easier than it was at last year’s U.S. Open.
Golf is about the bounces. Sometimes the ball hits the pin and drops in and sometimes it hits the cart path and bounds into the woods. Moldovan experienced the equivalent of both last week. On Monday, he barely missed qualifying for the U.S. Open, getting bounced from 3-for-2 playoff at Springfield Country Club, one of two qualifying sites in Ohio. He finished as first alternate, meaning he needed help if he was going to get to play the national championship.
Six days later, redemption arrived in the form of a prank phone call received during a Chinese dinner. “It’s so important to hit the fairway here,” he said. “The fairways aren’t crazy tight, but the penalty you get from hitting it in the rough or fairway bunker, it’s almost a guaranteed layup unless you get a really good lie, which is pretty unlikely. The course does a great job of testing every part of the game.”
