Public comment is now open on that proposal through the Utah Division of Air Quality, which has indicated its intent to approve a plan from California-based Granite Construction Company to operate a quarry a few miles up the canyon. danielmwoodruff
But opponents – including Fraser Bullock, who’s leading the effort to bring the Olympics back to Utah – say the quarry would be harmful.
Williams worries the picturesque area will change if the proposed quarry ultimately gets the green light. “Modelling results from the permitting process show that the I-80 South Quarry is very unlikely to even approach minor air quality source emissions thresholds,” Kuhlman said.“The long-term importation of aggregates to service the needs of the increasing Salt Lake City population is not a sustainable practice, and a failure to utilize resources such as those available at the I-80 South Quarry project site would require materials be transported further distances,” Kuhlman said.
Asked about Salt Lake County’s ordinance, Ashley Sumner, Utah DAQ spokesperson, said, “Our engineering and impact analysis showed the proposed project meets the requirements of federal air quality regulations and State of Utah air quality rules. Local ordinances are outside the scope of the Division of Air Quality.”
“Effective comments include legal references, specific regulatory standards or references to precedent at other similar sources,” said Sumner. “Comments that simply state they are opposed to the project or do not want additional emission sources in the area do not provide us with enough information when considering a permit.”
