When Italy went into lockdown, its athletes found themselves in an impossible situation: training in isolation for an Olympics that might not happen.
Long before the Italian government closed everything but supermarkets, banks and pharmacies, Elisa Di Francisca committed to her own personal quarantine. She wasn’t sick, nor did she have any particular risk factors. Di Francisca just couldn’t take any chances: She is a gold medal-winning fencer. The Olympics were four months away.
“As soon as I saw that cases were rising in Italy, I said I’m not competing,” she said from her home in Rome. “I’m locking myself in.”
