One in six Britons have canceled going to a Christmas party, and traffic in stores and restaurants is down, as Omicron causes self-imposed lockdowns
LONDON—First his staff began testing positive. Then came a wave of cancellations as the new. By the following week, Alex Thorp decided to cut his losses and close his wine bar, 161 Kirkdale, early for Christmas, switching the business back into lockdown mode.
“At this point it’s basically a lockdown anyway,” said Mr. Thorp, who has reverted to home deliveries and takeaway meals—a blueprint he developed during earlier rounds of restrictions.
