Bogard is One Piece's biggest mystery.
One Piece has a slew of mysteries to answer before it ends, including the nature of the titular treasure, the location of Laugh Tale, and the enigmatic past of the world, but the biggest one must be the truth behind the character named Bogard. Fans have been speculating for decades about Garp's mysterious right-hand man, and his appearance in the One Piece live action has grown the mystique around Bogard even more.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Bogard made his debut in the cover story Diary of Koby-Meppo as the right-hand man of Garp who, at the time, hadn't even been established as Luffy's Grandfather or "the Hero of the Marine". He shows some impressive swordsmanship, figures as Koby and Helmeppo's trainer, and then essentially disappears along with Garp until the two make an appearance in Water 7.
Bogard is notably treated as a non-entity in One Piece. In addition to having very few lines, Bogard was missing from the series for over a decade after Water 7 before reappearing in the Egghead arc, and he never significantly engages in combat. What adds realism to the mystery is the fact that Eiichiro Oda has named every Marine who made even a cameo appearance in the story, except for Bogard.
One Piece Conspicuously Ignores Bogard The contrast between how important Bogard should be and how little attention he receives makes him one of the most mysterious characters in the series, and that begs the question of whether One Piece will ever explore his character. Garp recently sacrificed himself to protect his protegees from the Blackbeard Pirates, and even if Garp wasn’t killed, there’s going to be a need for the Marines to avenge him at some point.
That being said, it’s likely that Bogard will remain uninvolved with the story. Bogard has essentially been a background character from conception, and it's likely that his importance and aura of mystery were constructed by the fans who hoped to learn more about him. With that still being the case even with the most recent developments in the Egghead arc, One Piece is likely to end with Bogard having little to no involvement in the story.
