Opinion: A new national monument for San Diego County sounds like a monumental idea [Opinion]
At the April Ramona community planning group meeting, on which The San Diego Union-Tribune reported, informative questions were raised about this concept. Having worked on projects like this before, it’s important to know that a national monument would protect an entire important landscape, not just one particular spot.
Importantly, this proposal would only affect federal lands, and existing uses and activities on the land would be grandfathered in.Surrounding communities like Ramona would reap significant benefits. We only need to turn to other California communities like Twentynine Palms and Morongo Valley as examples of how they have benefited from their nearby Mojave Trails and Sand to Snow national monuments.
