Opinion: Downtown San Diego pay toilet debate is flush with controversy [Opinion]
” : I live Downtown and am constantly amazed that we continue to see articles in the newspaper indicating a lack of public toilets in the Downtown area. All along the Embarcadero, including Seaport Village, there are public restrooms. To spend money adding more toilets is ludicrous and a waste of public funds.
The proposed costs of these facilities in the millions of dollars seem like a profit business for local contractors overcharging the city. I have spent hours walking aroundand have never seen a public toilet and yet here in San Diego they are within probably a quarter-mile of most Downtown locations.
We have streetlights at major intersections that are not functioning that we are told will take over a year to get fixed and roads that need repaving, so I hope our politicians will start focusing on more important priorities.If we are serious about helping our homeless population because we care about them, we need to help them have access to free outdoor toilets. We want to avert diseases spreading and people getting tickets for using the streets as their toilets, and preserve their dignity.
How come we have money to throw around for expanding convention centers and airports and catering to the wishes of the affluent, but we lack the funds to do simple things that are so desperately needed for necessary bodily functions? It’s a San Diego disgrace.
