Opinion: End the world's dependence on oil and gas by putting a price on carbon [Opinion]
I greatly appreciate your “Earth Watch - Diary of the planet” column. It’s always a harrowing read, especially “A foot higher,” which tells us that new data is a “blinking code red for the deepening climate emergency.” When I feel hopeless about our lack of action and political will to solve the climate crisis, I remember that action is the antidote to despair.
What can we do? We can advocate for federal legislation that would drastically lower emissions and stop climate change. Economists agree that putting a price on carbon and returning revenues to households as dividends is the most efficient, effective and just way to lower carbon emissions. Simply call or email your congressperson and senators and let them know that climate change legislation should be a priority. Voice your concerns. Exercise your political will.
Taking a long-term view, eliminating the world’s dependence on oil and gas accomplishes 2 important goals. Authoritarian leaders like Putin are crippled in dominating the world stage when their income source dries up. Climate change is brought under control when the world transitions to clean energy.
Placing a fee on carbon pollution provides effective economic incentives for individuals, businesses and industry to use clean energy. When demand increases, innovation and investment follow. Congress has recently considered putting a price on carbon in the reconciliation bill. The U.S. can be a world leader in promoting energy independence and responsible reduction of carbon emissions.
