A private member\u0027s bill from a Saskatchewan Conservative MP helped level the playing field for Canadian agricultural equipment makers.

The ag equipment, or short line, sector has become everything that federal and provincial governments along with academics and pundits have said Canada needs to succeed — innovators, building on the production of commodities to create new value-added products and selling to markets other than the U.S. and China.

For modern ag equipment to work, it must be able to ‘talk’ to or “inter-operate” with the combines and tractors it’s paired with. For non-farmers, imagine if the company that made your car prevented a generic replacement part made by other companies from working with your car because of a software lock.
