On the anniversary of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico has been hit by another major...

A flooded road is seen during the passage of hurricane Fiona in Villa Blanca, Puerto Rico, on Sept. 18, 2022. Fiona touched Puerto Rico at 3:20 p.m. local time , according to information from the United States National Hurricane Center , leaving a general blackout and rivers overflowing. Five years ago today, Hurricane Maria made a direct hit on Puerto Rico, ravaging the entire island and obliterating our outdated power grid.

And just as we did five years ago, throughout the wrath of Fiona, we’ve kept our lights on. Dr. María Eugenia Cabanillas-Narvaez from the University of Texas’ MD Anderson Hospital and her sister Maria Antonia were among the saints who were integral in coordinating the evacuation of the most urgently sick or injured from Puerto Rico on private flights. Those planes flew in critical supplies including 14,000 solar lamps which we distributed, teaching people how to harness the sun to light their homes.
