Opinion: In defense of Patrick Henry High School dropping honors classes [Opinion]
” : As a teacher at Patrick Henry High School 20 years ago, I remember the dismay we felt when the district initiated a plan giving weighted credit to advanced and honors classes. Students could take a class easier than advanced placement and receive the same weighted grade.
Many students chose the “advanced” class, burnishing their college credentials without the same high level of work. Regular classes were gutted, losing their best students to “advanced” classes. Not surprisingly, many of the students left behind in the regular classes were those whose parents were not savvy to the tracking that was going on.
The San Diego Unified School District has played this game now for decades, all the while espousing concerns for equity. Rather than being vilified, I believe Principal Michelle Irwin at Patrick Henry deserves kudos for addressing this hypocrisy head on.
