Opinion: International Women's Day should be celebrated every day, everywhere, not just once [Opinion]
Celebrating women who have made extraordinary contributions at all levels of society, in every corner of the world, and across centuries of history is a right, proper, and necessary thing to do — and not just on International Women’s Day March 8.
As it is, we honor women who have a few special things in common no matter where they come from. We honor those who changed things forever in science, industry, politics, government, human rights, education, the arts and humanities. They are fully deserving of recognition and their exalted place in our history, although most did not seek the celebrity they earned. We honor those who fought long odds to be simply who they wanted to be.
On International Women’s Day, do we pay enough attention to those courageous women breaking new ground for the next generation, whether they are pointed out to us by international film crews in faraway places or whether they are right here serving others at our local nonprofits? It’s about our own unsung women in San Diego, women like Eva Pacheco, a former elementary and middle school teacher in Guanajuato, Mexico, who moved to El Cajon and led a group of parents and teachers to start Excellence and Justice in Education Academies, a dual immersion Spanish/English charter school focused on social justice in El Cajon.
