Our current health care system is still more focused on treating obesity-related health complications than providing preventative treatment from the onset.
Legislators continue to be influenced by outdated stigma and biases that falsely claim obesity is a choice, disregarding medical experts and allowing Medicaid and Medicare programs to offer little to no support for obesity treatment.
My goal is not to raise awareness about obesity — an epidemic killing thousands of Hispanic Americans with no end in sight — just because it’s National Hispanic Heritage Month. My goal is to amplify the fact that we have medically backed solutions to save lives, but in the name of costs, stigma and misinformation, we as a country are choosing to do nothing.
We urge lawmakers across the country to take decisive action and ensure that anti-obesity treatment is accessible and affordable for all, not just those with financial means and influence. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus plays a crucial role in advocating for the needs and concerns of the Hispanic community in the United States, and it must adopt comprehensive coverage and treatments for obesity as a key health care priority.
Our goal remains steadfast in the pursuit of equitable health care for the Hispanic population and all Americans.
