'NFL players who engage in such a brutal sport, should have marijuana as an option for dealing with pain,' writes JarrettBell for usatodaysports.

No, Seahawks receiver Josh Gordon is not Exhibit A for why the NFL needs to scrap its outdated restriction on marijuana., another indefinite ban, in his NFL career for violating not only the substance-abuse policy but also, the league announced, for running afoul of the policy for performance-enhancing drugs.

Wright knows this topic will keep coming up as the players union negotiates with NFL owners for a new labor pact. He said the adjustment Major League Baseball agreed to earlier this month under its drug policy – scrapping marijuana as a banned substance for minor leaguers, a standard that has existed for years for major leaguers – is “a step in the right direction.”

There are 33 states, plus the District of Columbia, where cannabis is legalized for medical purposes. A dozen of those states allow it for recreational purposes. That the NFL – where so many former players, including Chris Long, Percy Harvin and Kyle Turley, among others, have sworn by the benefits – still bars marijuana is mind-boggling.

The NFL’s position has traditionally pointed to the Food and Drug Administration's rating of marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug. And there are traditional concerns about marijuana as a “gateway drug” that could lead to other issues. For years, commissioner Roger Goodell’s stock answer has been that the league “will follow the science” on marijuana. To that possibility, the league and union earlier this year formed the Joint Pain Management Committee, composed of medical experts appointed by the league and players' union to study and make recommendations that go far beyond marijuana.
