From WSJopinion: The media undertakes Mission Impossible in trying to categorize Trump statements, writes HolmanJenkins

Jenkins, Jr. July 23, 2019 7:04 pm ET Barack Obama may have been under-qualified and under-experienced when he ran in 2008, but his election allowed the country to feel good about itself. Democrats should be having a cakewalk to 2020 by giving Trump voters a candidate they could feel good about voting for to signal an end to the Trump experiment. That’s not the election we seem to be getting. And the media aren’t helping.
He’s right. It is simply an assertion by Mr. Trump’s critics that he had racist intent. It can never be more than that unless Mr. Trump decides to declare himself a racist. No fact is available to belie him if he denies the intent ascribed to him. How is this a good position for a news organization to be in?
I trust you can see what’s wrong with both approaches. Especially when critics insist on emphasizing two words of Mr. Trump’s 121-word tweet storm, the alleged borrowed-from-history trope “go back,” while ignoring the rest. Mr. Trump makes a great deal of trouble for himself because he insists on free-associating in public. He won’t, like other politicians, stick to scripts carefully scrubbed of ambiguity. But the press does not make truth out of ambiguity by putting words in his mouth.
