Opinion: San Diego County must ramp up outreach to get CalFresh food benefits to hungry households [Opinion]
Like most of California, San Diego County has widespread poverty because of high housing costs. That’s why a recent KPBSshould be a call to action for county supervisors. It cited a San Diego Hunger Coalition study that found that more than 285,000 eligible county residents — about 8 percent of the population, in communities from City Heights to La Jolla — aren’t getting benefits from CalFresh, a federally funded program that the state requires counties to operate.
Many people are apparently daunted by a time-consuming application process or don’t know the eligible income limit is double the federal poverty level. And some immigrants and asylum seekers may fear without reason that applying for the benefits will hurt their chances for citizenship. Also, while those without legal immigration status are not eligible for CalFresh, their U.S.-born children are.
