Opinion: What are people saying about Gov. Newsom's gas plan for California car owners? [Opinion]
California Governor Gavin Newsom plans to give $400 to all vehicle owners, even registered owners of electric vehicles.
Only gasoline and diesel fuel vehicles owners should receive the $400.00 because after taxes per gallon the balance goes to maintaining, improving freeways, highways and streets.The $400 would be better used to help low income families who are struggling because of the high cost of living in California.
Low end EV’s cost around $30,000. Federal tax credits for buying an EV mean very little to low income earners because they usually pay zero Federal income tax.Here we go again. Another poorly thought-out plan from our governor. He wants to give all of us $400 to defray the cost of gasoline. Evidently, it doesn’t matter how much we drive our car or whether or not our car even uses gasoline. Give the help to the people who need it most. That’s not me.
Yes, we all want to see the day when fossil fuel is not needed, but this is the worst possible time to punish those who need to use their vehicle to make a living. It makes absolutely no sense to give a gas pay-back to a person with an electric car. Give the break to the gardeners, service industry employees and the many others who need it by temporarily suspending the ridiculously high California gas tax. You can sure tell that Gov. Newsom is up for re-election.
