People walk on the campus of Rice University near the statue of the school’s namesake, William Marsh Rice, Thursday, April 1, 2021 in Houston. Rice University has announced an expansion of its student body and its campus. The physical expansion on the college’s 300 acres, will include a 12th residential college, a new engineering building, a building for the visual and dramatic arts, and a new student center that will largely replace the Rice Memorial Center.

," : I read with great interest about the relocation of the William Marsh Rice statue from the center of the Academic Quadrangle to a less obvious location within the quadrangle. I attended Rice in the '70s. As a Hispanic student, I passed by that statue every day on my way to class. Yes, there were very few minority students at Rice at that time. Do I think that the presence of that statue would have changed my decision to attend Rice? No, not at all.

William Marsh Rice did own slaves and African Americans were not allowed to attend Rice for many years. Hispanics weren't exactly welcome either. I felt the statue paid homage to a man who I never knew or met but who allowed me the opportunity to get a good education. I do not mean to reduce the feelings people have for wanting the statue relocated. But one must also consider that the cost to move this large statue will likely be very high. And where will these funds come from? The cost will likely be passed on to the students and their families in the form of higher tuition. I would think a better use of this money would be to set up a fund for minority students to help pay for their college tuition.

I can tell you this: If I were asked the question, would I rather have the statue moved or have part of my tuition paid for, I would have jumped at the chance to receive the financial aid. It would have saved my parents a lot of anxiety.
