Oppenheimer's practical effects and massive scale are shown off in a new featurette for Christopher Nolan's new movie. Starring Cillian Murphy in the title role, Oppenheimer chronicles the life of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man largely responsible for the invention of the atomic bomb.
Now, ahead of the Oppenheimer release date later this month, a new featurette trailer shared by the Universal Pictures YouTube channel spotlights the film's practical effects, sets, cast, and sheer scale. Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr. and more all urge fans to see the film on the largest screen possible to do justice to Nolan's vision and the impressive filmmaking on display.
How Oppenheimer Continues A Christopher Nolan Tradition From his earliest films, Nolan has remained committed to making movies using only practical effects whenever possible. Although many of his films have certainly relied on visual effects for certain sequences, the filmmaker consistently attempts to ground his storytelling in real locations with real stunts and practical effects.
Oppenheimer continues this same tradition and actually takes it to an entirely new level, with Nolan claiming that the film has "zero CGI shots" throughout the entirety of its runtime. That's not to say that the movie doesn't feature visual effects, which can be used to compliment or enhance footage captured in-camera, but it's still quite a claim. This claim is made all the more impressive considering Oppenheimer recreates the Trinity test, the first nuclear blast.
