A campaign group opposing a proposal to make it harder to change the Ohio Constitution has asked the Ohio Supreme Court to block the Aug. 8 election that Republican state lawmakers set earlier this week when they voted to send the proposal to voters.

A campaign group opposing a proposal to require a 60% voter supermajority to change the Ohio constitution has filed a lawsuit with the Ohio Supreme Court. The case alleges that Republican state lawmakers illegally set a vote to decide the 60% in August. COLUMBUS, Ohio — , says that Ohio can’t legally hold statewide elections in August, since Republican state lawmakers voted in December to end August special elections.

Republican state lawmakers voted on Wednesday ask voters to approve what’s called Senate Joint Resolution 2 Lawmakers’ decision to abandon SB92 could have been a tactical decision. Bills can be subjected to a referendum, which may have jeopardized the Aug. 8 election had someone filed for one, since Ohio freezes new laws while referendum efforts play out.
