It was 20 years ago this week that five relievers put on the ultimate next-man-up display after Roy Oswalt left his start with a groin injury.
Yankees players Raul Mondesi, Charles Gipson and Derek Jeter could only watch as the Astros completed their six-pitcher no-hitter June 11, 2003, at Yankee Stadium in New York. It was the first time New York had been no-hit at home since 1952.The Astros have thrown 15 in their history. But few were as unlikely as the one thrown 20 years ago Sunday.
Oswalt retired leadoff man Alfonso Soriano, then struck out Jeter and Jason Giambi swinging, but the latter punchout came at a painful cost. The last pitch to Giambi in the first inning, I felt a tear, and I knew I wasn’t going to make it through the second inning. I wasn’t going to say anything; I was going to try to see if I could go out there and maybe throw through some spots, change speeds and maybe get through another inning, maybe two.
I’m sitting in the bullpen, and I don’t even think I got to finish my first cup of coffee. It was not something that you can be prepared for. You get the call, and it’s like, “Uh, oh.” Then Wagner’s like, “Pete, get ready. I think it’s going to be you.” It can be a blessing that you don’t have that much time to think so you really don’t get in your own head. If you start thinking too much at Yankee Stadium, it can easily go south.
Saarloos, back out for his first full inning, was the beneficiary of the night’s best defensive play in the fifth. With one out, Soriano hit a sinking line drive to short left field. Berkman, dubbed “Big Puma” years earlier, made a nice running catch, tumbling to the turf to keep the Yankees hitless.I just remember getting a good jump on it and knowing I was going to catch it. As an outfielder, you kind of have an idea when a ball’s hit if it’s a play you can make or not.
