Netflix this week announced the creation of the Poussey Washington Fund, named after the popular “Orange is the New Black” character, to support immigration and criminal justice reform.
“We’ve seen how much ‘Orange is the New Black’ has impacted you and people all over the world. Now, we want to continue that impact long after the show is over by launching the Poussay Washington Fund,” actress Samira Wiley, who played Washington, said in a video announcing the project. “The fund will support nonprofit advocacy groups whose goals are to reform criminal justice, protect immigrants’ rights, end mass incarceration and support women who have been affected by it.
Poussey Washington was an incarcerated black woman on “Orange is the New Black” who is killed by a corrections officer in the fourth season of the show.
The fund was announced with a video in which fans of the show talk about what it has meant to them and how it represented their own experiences before being surprised by some its stars. “Some of the struggles that I went through growing up were not having any characters on TV that were like me. The show was really impactful because it really gave queer visibility,” one fan said.
“I had nobody [at home], and people would ask where my parents were,” another said. “It was awkward. It’s like how do you tell somebody your mom’s in jail. I would actually have to stop watching. I would just process it and cry because I realized I wasn’t alone."
