“The spirit of a character is what really matters,” Jodi Benson, the voice of Princess Ariel in the original Little Mermaid, said at a recent panel
approves of the studio’s decision to castFor the last week, the young black singer has been the subject of racist remarks on social media, with trolls disapproving of Disney’s decision to go with color-blind casting for the role. During a recent appearance at the comic convention Florida Supercon, Benson addressed the controversy and praised Disney’s decision.
“I think that the most important thing is to tell the story,” she said. “We have, as a family, we have raised our children…[so] that we don’t see anything that’s different on the outside. I think that the spirit of a character is what really matters. What you bring to the table in a character as far as their heart and their spirit is what really counts.”
Benson then reiterated that point, praising Disney for prioritizing storytelling and getting to the essence of the character. “We need to be storytellers and no matter what we look like on the outside, no matter our race...our color of skin, our dialect, whether I’m tall or thin, whether I’m overweight or underweight or my hair is whatever color—we really need to tell the story,” she said.
