Police departments in Chicago and the suburbs have been dealing with shootings, carjackings as crime continues in city, suburbs
CHICAGO -- Saying"enough is enough," President Joe Biden pledged on Thursday that the federal government would step up its fight against gun violence.Last year, there were more than 800 homicides in Chicago. That's the most since 1995.Then there have been brazen robberies in recent months, often at high-end stores. Recently released numbers for January 2022 show that homicides, robberies and carjackings are down compared to January 2021.
"I believe there's probably three big drivers. One, police departments have gone from proactive policing to reactive policing. Number two, soft-on-crime policies from state's attorneys, prosecutors and judges. And three, lack of opportunity and a pathway to success in disadvantaged communities," said Ed Farrell. He's a retired deputy U.S. marshal and the owner of private security company Silver Star Protection Group.
Suburban police departments have been dealing with violence as well. James Kruger is the former chief of the Oak Brook Police Department. Just two days before Christmas, there was a shooting at Oakbrook Center Mall. He said it appeared the shooting happened as the result of a"by chance" meeting of individuals with a previous history or issues. Kruger was previously the president of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
"We're seeing a lot of our colleagues have between a 10% to 20% decrease in staffing either due to retirements or other attrition rates and we're really trying to encourage individuals to come take the test and become a law enforcement officer." Kruger said.
