The proportion of Asian American, Latino and white lawmakers are close to the state as a whole, but that's not the case with two other key groups.

While the number of Republicans and Democrats in the Arizona Legislature is the same as the past two years, there are now more female lawmakers than any time in the state's history.

"The diversity in the Arizona Legislature should be celebrated because it represents the diversity of our entire state," said Rep. Marcelino Quiñonez, D-Phoenix, who won election to office in November after he was appointed in 2021, and is now the House Minority Co-Whip."This means communities are being heard and electing members who look and sound like them. This is encouraging and should promote more civic engagement in the future.

Native Americans remain under-represented. So do Black Arizonans, with only one representative in the Legislature, David Marshall Sr., R-Snowflake, who stands with the Trump-supporting, far-right side of the Republican Party. Last year there were two, Reps. Reginald Bolding, D-Laveen, and Walter Blackman, R-Snowflake.

Arizona voters have long supported female candidates more than in most states, and that has translated to a level of gender equity at the Capitol. Karen Fann, who served as Senate President from 2018 until earlier this year, was only the second woman in that post. Kimberly Yee, who was reelected as state Treasurer in November, became the second Majority Leader in 2017 — which was 44 years after the first woman Majority Leader, Sandra Day O'Connor.

Sen. Sally Gonzales is one of the most experienced lawmakers in the Legislature, having served six terms in the House and two in the Senate. She just won reelection for a third term in the Senate. She's also a member of the Pascua Yaqui tribe, making her one of four Native Americans in the Legislature.
