The Lone Star College-Tomball Community Library partnered with several local entities and the USCIS to host a citizenship ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, at the Beckendorf Conference Center in Tomball.Victor Moussoki watched his daughter walk across the stage to accept her citizenship certificate and was filled with pride. It brought back memories from years ago when he completed his naturalization process.
The ceremony was hosted by Lone Star College-Tomball Community Library – a branch of the Harris County Public Library system – in collaboration with several community partners and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Moussoki had been pleasantly surprised to learn the event would be in the conference center at LSC-Tomball where he is an economics professor.
The idea of hosting the ceremony aligned with programs the library already provides, explained the library's director Janna Hoglund.“It was very natural for us because we are already offering naturalization and citizenship services and this is like the final round of this process, so it made it very logical,” she said.
Watching from the back of the room, Howard noticed a man wearing a T-shirt that read “My wife is a new citizen.” He was accompanied by his children dressed in patriotic attire. Another young man in a wheelchair pulled at his mother who then helped him stand during the national anthem.“The families that were there to support their children or wives, husbands or whoever was getting their certificates,” she said.
Moussoki said his daughter, who is currently a medical student, would not have had the same opportunities in Congo as she does in the United States. He felt the ceremony was a celebration of diversity and people’s ability to pursue pathways they may not have been afforded elsewhere.
