One tornado in Calhoun County was rated EF3.Severe thunderstorms spawned a swarm of tornadoes in parts of Iowa on Wednesday that damaged some homes in what was one of the state's most prolific tornado days in 41 years.
One of the tornadoes in Calhoun County was rated EF3 and carved through the south side of Lake City, Iowa, about 70 miles northwest of Des Moines, just before 4 p.m. A third supercell thunderstorm spawned at least one tornado that lofted debris near the towns of Denver and Waverly, in Bremer County, and damaged a home near Shell Rock in neighboring Butler County. Damage in these areas was also rated EF1 after initial surveys.Another tornado was reported by a spotter in Floyd County, east of Mason City.
Wednesday's tally of 26 confirmed tornadoes was the third most of any day in Iowa since 1980, according to the National Weather Service.
