Manny Machado makes progress with back but sits again; opening-day starter to be decided soon
It’s a particularly good thing for the Padres that the candidates for the final spot in the starting rotation have begun spring training pitching well. Especially this year, because they might need most of them right away.They will now play 14 games in the season’s first 14 days. How rare is that? It is the first time the Padres have gone that long without their first day off since playing 16 straight to start the 1991 season.
Teams have two extra roster spots to work with the first 3½ weeks of the season, so it is conceivable that three of the four pitchers vying for the fifth spot make the opening-day roster in some role. Nick Martinez, Chris Paddack and Ryan Weathers would seemingly be the favorites to do so. The Padres appear to be leaning toward starting MacKenzie Gore in Triple-A.
Darvish continued a strong spring in his four innings in Sunday’s 5-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. He cruised through the first three innings, allowing just a single, before surrendering a home run to Myles Straw in the fourth. That was the only other baserunner Darvish allowed. and went on to have one of the strongest seasons ever by a Padres starting pitcher. His 3.13 ERA ranked 31, his 1.08 WHIP ranked sixth and his .213 batting average allowed ranked fourth all time among Padres pitchers who have thrown at least 150 innings in a season. Musgrove’s 203 strikeouts in 2021 were ninth most ever recorded by a Padres pitcher in a single season.
