Baseball's new schedule will send San Diego club 44,208 miles to 24 cities, 3 countries as it chases World Series title

Playing 162 games in 19 cities across four time zones in 186 days was a grind.AdvertisementMost people affiliated with the Padres voiced something similar. Athletes and coaches are funny that way. They don’t want to appear as if they are making excuses.

Almost every MLB team is traveling more miles in 2022 as a result of the revamped schedule that has every team playing every other team — American League and National League. To fit the extra interleague games into the schedule, 24 division games were eliminated. Like the trip that begins with an April 19 flight to Arizona, continues in Chicago and finishes in Mexico City on April 30 before the Padres play the next day in San Diego.

Additionally, because of the dynamic of losing two or three hours when traveling from the West to the Midwest or East Coast, teams like the Padres generally have the bulk of their off days on the road. This year, the Padres’ first day off in San Diego is May 18, more than a month and a half into the season. They have six more days off in San Diego, not counting the All-Star break. They had nine last season and 11 in ’21.Virtually everyone agreed on that.

“I think it’ll be good for baseball,” Cronenworth said. “Everybody is playing everybody. Not that we didn’t get a real sense of how good teams were in the past. Good teams are good teams no matter who they play. But I think you’ll see some more disparity throughout the league because everybody has got to play .”
