Paint protects cyclists in The Netherlands, white lines not so magic anyplace else, finds study.
Thermoplastic road paint is no substitute for physical separation of cyclists and motorists. That’s the conclusion of a new Australian study which measured the distance motorists gave cyclists riding on striped bicycle lanes.
Dr. Ian Walker riding a camera-equipped bike for a 2007 study into why motorists overtake cyclists with just inches to spareThis study used a bike ridden by Walker and equipped with a camera and a distance measuring device. Walker recorded data from 2,500 drivers who passed him on the roads close to his workplace, the University of Bath. Half the time he wore a bicycle helmet and half the time he didn’t. The results showed motorists tended to pass him more closely when he rode wearing a helmet.
“Our results demonstrate that a single stripe of white paint is not sufficient to protect people who ride bikes,” said a press statement from lead author Dr. Ben Beck, Monash University’s deputy head of emergency and trauma research. That is not to suggest that we should not provide on-road marked bicycle lanes. Rather, the focus of on-road cycling infrastructure needs to be on providing infrastructure that separates cyclists from motor vehicles by a physical barrier.
Why are there so many near-misses? There might be a small number of malicious motorists eager to dole out “punishment passes” but it’s also down to inattention from motorists. In a– this time using in-car cameras – it was found that an “alarming” 8% of motorists are distracted when they overtake cyclists.
