Israel has closed the main commercial crossing in the Gaza Strip, effectively banning exports from the coastal territory after saying it uncovered explosives hidden in clothing being shipped to the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian fishing boats return at dawn after a nighttime fishing trip to the seaport in Gaza City, Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023. After allegedly uncovering explosives hidden in clothing shipped from Gaza to the West Bank, the Israeli government opted for a punitive response this week, clamping down on all cargo shipments out of Gaza and choking off the territory’s already ailing economy.
