WARNING: Major spoilers for Partner Track aheadThe co-showrunner of Partner Track sheds light on that shocking finale betrayal. Consisting of 10 episodes, and making its Netflix premiere on August 26, the adaptation of Helen Wan's 2013 novel stars Teen Wolf alum Arden Cho as rising legal star Ingrid Yun.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY As it progresses, Partner Track examines those costs and compromises greatly. At one point, Ingrid feels as though she has to betray a friend for the sake of her career. In the finale, Ingrid then experiences the sting of betrayal herself when it's revealed the reason she doesn't make partner is that Jeff Murphy told the firm about her arrest.
It's a conversation we had in the writers room a lot about Jeff Murphy's character and why he does what he did. Also, what exactly did he do? That would inform how we feel about it and the philosophy of the writers room, is we want every character to be [as] complex and nuanced as possible. Writers are often given the note to make characters more likeable, and I always take issue with that.
In terms of a potential Partner Track season 2, Netflix executive Jinny Howe stopped short of confirming it would happen. But, as things currently stand, there's a good chance that the stories of Ingrid, Jeff, and others will continue. That's welcome news for fans that have invested in the characters and want to see how Ingrid responds to the betrayal.
It's an unpleasant but ultimately truthful depiction of the kind of cutthroat decisions people can sometimes make for their careers. If the story continues, with Netflix making the decision to renew Partner Track, it sounds like the creative team is aiming for the kind of nuance and difficult questions that don't always make for the most likable characters but truthfully reflect the career-driven world they inhabit.
