“2019 was a big year for plant based meat.' 🍔
“Consumers fueling this market are people who do eat meat some of the time,’’ says Karen Formanski, health and nutrition analyst with Mintel."I don’t think the meat industry is seriously threatened. But I do think this is going to continue to grow. ... People want variety.
"You have these new fake meats that are calling themselves plant-based, and I think that’s designed to really impart this health halo on these products,'' says Will Coggin, the center's managing director."That's where we’re trying to educate consumers this stuff is not really any healthier for you than real meat, and ... you may not know that this is ultra-processed food.
Similarly, Impossible Foods says that a 4-ounce serving of its burger, which is hormone- and antibiotic-free, has as much protein as a similar serving of ground beef, and doesn't contain cholesterol. Additionally, it says creating the plant-based patty requires roughly 75% less water and 95% less land than a beef patty, and produces roughly 87% fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
Companies like Smithfield Foods, Hormel and Tyson – best known for ham, chili, chicken and other meat-based products – are carving out their own niche in the plant-based space. Tyson Foods' Raised & Rooted brand produces plant-based nuggets, and the company has invested in a plant-based shrimp company. Nestle, meanwhile, which purchased plant-based meat maker Sweet Earth Foods in 2017, says its DiGiorno and Stouffer's brands will debut frozen pizza and lasagna featuring Sweet Earth's plant-based version of ground beef next spring.
